Brandon and Katherine shared their comments on the importance of participating in sports and recreational activities while going to school. All three, including Robert Kirwan pointed out that success in an area of interest outside the classroom transfers into academic studies in virtually all cases. Students feel good about themselves, develop positive self-esteem and are confident about taking on new challenges whether on the field or in the classroom.

On Monday, February 4, 2008, Dr. Nancy Rebellato, Doctor of Naturopathic medicine and Clinic Director of Rebellato Health Centre in Sudbury, appeared as Robert Kirwan's special guest on THE LEARNING CLINIC INSIDE EDUCATION. 

Dr. Rebellato explained that “Naturopathic Medicine is a complete and coordinated approach to medicine that combines medical sciences with traditional healing wisdom.” She went on to state that the basic principles of naturopathic medicine are founded on the belief that you must find and treat the cause of the problem and not merely focus on treating the symptoms. You must above all else do no harm to the patient, but in finding the root cause of the problem you should treat the whole person, including his/her mental, emotional, spiritual and energetic elements.  She also pointed out that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself naturally, so it is important to use common sense medicine when helping a patient.

Linda Fontaine is the Public Education/First Link Coordinator with the Sudbury-Manitoulin Alzheimer Society.  She was the special guest on Inside Education on February 11, 2008 .

Linda provided listeners with some very important background information about Alzheimer Disease and gave us a good explanation of the typical symptoms that are exhibited by people in various stages of this disease. She explained that alzheimer’s disease is something that attacks the brain in such a way that people tend to lose control over their ability to control their emotions and also to recall information. Many of the people with Alzheimer’s disease act in ways that are completely out of context to their situation and often feel as if they are living in a different time than the one of which they are currently part.

On Monday, February 18, 2008, Kim Donaldson, Program Director of the Advertising Course in the School of Business, Media and Creative Arts at Cambrian College, appeared as Robert Kirwan's special guest of the week on THE LEARNING CLINIC INSIDE EDUCATION.  

Kim spoke passionately about the world of advertising and marketing, indicating to all listeners that this would be one of the most exciting and satisfying careers they could ever imagine.

Kim Donaldson was born and raised in Sudbury and attended Lasalle Secondary School before eventually pursuing her diploma specializing in advertising at Cambrian.

When Derek Newman graduated from Laurentian University with a Masters Degree in Human Development he sent out fifty job applications to prospective employers. He did his due diligence and followed up his letters with appropriate phone calls. Out of all of those applications, he ended up with two interviews, and found himself in a position as the Youth Program Coordinator with the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth.

David Lickley was the special guest of The Learning Clinic on May 5, 2008. As the senior producer for Sudbury's Science North Imax Theatre, David has produced several films, including his masterpiece, "The Mysteries of The Great Lakes.

Grant Dinan, President of Dynamic Insurance Brokers, was the special guest of The Learning Clinic on May 26, 2008. He stated that a lot has changed n the insurance industry, but the qualities and traits that make some people more successful than others hasn't changed much. You still need to develop the key transferable skills, no matter what your field.

Joel Del Rosario, General Manager of Staples Business Depot, Notre Dame Ave. location, was the special guest on June 9, 2008. His message was that in order to be an effective leader in a big box retail chain like Staples, you must know every single job in the building. Furthermore, you must be willing to demonstrate your commitment by being on the floor and working alongside your team.

Debra Sampson, Coordinator of the Tourism and Travel Program at Cambrian College was the special guest on June 9, 2008. She provided a very exciting and passionate overview of the Tourism and Travel industry and identified some of the key characteristics that people need to be successful in this kind of career.

Dr. Lyne Giroux, Greater Sudbury's only full-time dermatolist, was the special guest on June 23, 2008. She provided a very exciting and passionate overview of what it takes to become a doctor in society today.

Andy Szanto, a member of Team Diabetes who is planning on running a marathon in Dubland Ireland in October 2008, and his 10 year old son,  Cole Szanto were the special guests of The Learning Clinic on July 14, 2008.

VANESSA CHARETTE IS A UNIVERSITY STUDENT WHO IS SLOWLY TRYING TO DETERMINE HER GOALS IN LIFE

Vanessa Charette, a gifted student in high school, graduated from Confederation Secondary School ’s French Immersion program with a 98% average and is currently entering the second year of the Bachelor of Science in Behavioural Neuroscience program at Laurentian University. She appeared as the special guest on July 21, talking about her future and providing a lot of insight for young students following in her footsteps.

PAULINE QUENNVILLE EXPLAINS HOW SHE PURSUED HER PASSION FOR WRITING 

Pauline Quennville, a self-published author, was the special guest on The Learning Clinic on August 4, 2008. She shared her story about how she came from the small Town of St. Charles to follow a career in Human Resources with CMHC. Today, she lives in Blind River and is pursuing her dream of becoming an author.

SONYA ARCAND PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO BOWEN THERAPY TREATMENT

Sonya Arcand, a Bowen Therapy Practitioner who operates a her clinic out of her residence in Hanmer, was the special guest on The Learning Clinic on August 18, 2008. She provided us with some excellent information about this wonderful alternative treatment that has produced amazing results in people of all ages. Her clinic is called 'A Matter of Health".

Monday, August 25, 2008 will be remembered as an historic day for Deborah Ann Frankel, General Manager of CKLU 96.7FM Radio which is broadcast from the studios at Laurentian University. Here she is shown with Richard Lloyd of Axsys Computers.

Deborah and Lloyd are giving a “thumbs up” to the first “streamed” broadcast which was sent out over the internet during the weekly Monday evening show, The Learning Clinic, which is hosted by Valley East’s Robert Kirwan every Monday at 6 p.m.. During that particular show Kirwan was doing a phone interview with Patrick Murphy, the person who is biking across Canada in the first annual Pedal Against Cancer tour.

Now that the station is “streaming” its signal through the internet, people all over the world will be able to “tune in” simply by going to the web site at www.cklu.ca and clicking on the Listen Live button along the side. Instead of using a radio, you can now listen to your favourite shows while you are working on your computer or lap top any where you have access to the internet.Hundreds of Laurentian University students and alumni live in Valley East , so this is a significant milestone for their school. There are also several people living in Valley East who are hosts of various programs on CKLU, which is known as Sudbury ’s Alternative Radio Station.

Susan Lecompte and Don Dupuis Jr. were the special "long-distance telephone" guests of The Learning Clinic on September 8, 2008. They told us about the new children's book they co-authored and helped provide listeners with insight into the world of writing. They conducted their interviews from Ottawa and Newmarket.

STEVE & LINE PRICE INTRODUCE LISTENERS TO GEOCACHING PHENOMENON

Steve and Line Price of Lively were the special guests on the show on September 15, 2008. They talked about their experiences as avid geocachers and gave people some insight into the nature of this wonderful recreational pursuit that is taking the world by storm. MELISSA MATHESON TALKS ABOUT SELF IMAGE OF YOUNG GIRLS AND THE IMPACT ON THEIR SCHOOL AND CAREER CHOICES

On Monday, September 22, 2008, Melissa Matheson, standing in the photo on the left, Executive Director of the Sudbury and Area Curves facilities appeared as the special guest of the week on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Ms. Matheson shared her thoughts about the importance of fitness in the development of a positive self image among girls and young women. 

LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY ASSOCIATION OF MATURE AND PART-TIME STUDENTS PRESIDENT SPEAKS OUT

On Monday, September 29, 2008, Richard Paquette, President of the Laurentian University Association of Mature and Part-Time Students took time to visit as a special guest of  THE LEARNING CLINIC. He shared his thoughts about the benefits of pursuing a university degree on a part-time basis and provided some advice for listeners who are interested in taking this route to a degree.

A CAREER IN PUBLIC RELATIONS - NOT FOR PROFIT SECTOR AND OTHER OPTIONS

On Monday, October 6, 2008, Jana Schilkie (shown on the right), Community Development & Marketing intern, and Genevieve Poulin, Fundraising Assistant with the Arthritis Society, Ontario Division, were the special special guests of the week on THE LEARNING CLINIC. The young ladies shared their thoughts about a career in public relations, particularly in the Not-For-Profit sector.  

LIVING WITH CANCER AND FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS

On Monday, October 13, 2008, Kevin Shanahan, a retired CN worker who now drives trucks and writes as a columnist with a local newspaper was the special Thanksgiving guest of the week on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Mr. Shanahan shared his story of courage and inspiration as he has learned how to deal with the challenges of living with cancer. 

THE ROLE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL DUAL-CREDIT PROGRAM AND HOW IT IS HELPING MOTIVATE STUDENTS TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION

On Monday, October 27, 2008, Elizabeth Freelandt, Vice-President of Student Services & Strategic Initiatives with Cambrian College, and Keleen Shonfeldt, Student Success Coordinator of Cambrian College, appeared as special guests on THE LEARNING CLINIC. The ladies discussed the new dual-credit program that is now available to secondary school students at Cambrian College. 

ARTHRITIS SOCIETY PROVIDES EXCELLENT PLACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE TO LAUNCH PUBLIC RELATIONS CAREER

On Monday, November 3, 2008, four people from the Arthritis Society of Ontario - Sudbury Branch appeared as special guests on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Shown in the photo, from the left, are: Dax Law (Dax is 14 years of age and is in Grade 9 at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School . He was diagnosed at the age of 7 with a number of different arthritis conditions. He is the Local Arthritis Youth Ambassador); Jana Shilkie (Community Development and Marketing Intern); Mary-Lou Hussak (Manager of Regional Development for Northeastern Ontario); and Hugh Ferguson (Honourary Chair for the 2008 Arthritis Swim - Arthritis has been a part of Hugh’s life for the past number of years.  When he was 40 he became an active, competitive runner.  Within a few years, he was a serious competitive tri-athlete.  Because of arthritis, Hugh had to have a hip replacement eight years ago and had to give up his running.  Although he also suffer from arthritis in both shoulders, he has been able to continue swimming competitively.  Today, at the age of 71, Hugh leads a very active and rewarding life.  He even swims three times a week with the Laurentian Masters Swim Club in Greater Sudbury.  Hugh is a huge supporter of the 2008 Arthritis Swim and is here tonight to encourage everyone, no matter what your abilities, to participate.)

YOUNG LADIES DISCUSS THEIR DREAMS OF ENTERING THE TEACHING PROFESSION IN THE FUTURE

On Monday, November 10, 2008, Vivian Bourikos, on the left, and Lisa McGowan, appeared as special guests on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Vivian, who hails from Toronto,  is in her 3rd year of the Concurrent Education Program, majoring in History. She hopes to become a Junior / Intermediate teacher when she graduates. Lisa is from the Guelph area. She is in her 2nd year of the Concurrent Education Program, majoring in Psychology. Her aspirations are to work in the Primary / Junior division. Both shared their experiences while growing up in their respective communities and discusses some of the challenges facing students today.

COMMERCE STUDENTS EXPLAIN VENTURE PROJECT

On Monday, November 17, 2008, Courtney Conaty, Michelle Goneen, Melissa Kirkey, and Justin Sawicz appeared as special guests on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Missing from the photo is the fifth member of their group, Danielle Roy. They are all 2nd Year Commerce students with Laurentian University who are part of a group working on a special Venture Project. They shared their experiences in the Commerce program and talked about a wide variety of issues facing students today.

GREATER SUDBURY POLICE SERVICES PROFESSIONALS OFFER THEIR THOUGHTS & FEELINGS ON AIR

On Monday, November 24, 2008, Sgt. Valerie Tiplady, Barb Makela, and Cst. Victor Leroux, of the Greater Sudbury Police Services appeared as special guests on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Sgt. Tiplady is with the Criminal Investigations Branch and is the High Risk Offender Officer with the force. She is currently working on a special Victim Safety Project. Barb Makela is the Victim & Youth Referral Co-ordinator. Cst. Leroux is with the Rural Unit of the force. They shared their personal experiences and feelings about their career and explained their respective roles with the Greater Sudbury Police Services.

Brent Holland, host of the popular CKLU program, Night Fright, was a special guest of The Learning Clinic early in January. He took time to talk about his career in the creative arts, in particular with the production of music for commercials, international performing stars and even NASA. He has produced countless background music pieces for radio, television and movies. He also talked extensively about the career choices in the arts and encouraged young people to follow their dreams.

On Monday, January 26,  2009, Patricia Caine, Volunteer Coordinator with the Valley East Youth Centre, appeared as a special guest on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Patricia was bringing listeners up to date with some of the renovations and program improvements that have been implemented at the Valley East Youth Centre this year. She also discussed some of the major issues facing young teens in a town like Valley East, citing the fact that more exposure is needed to promote the facility as a positive centre for young teens. 

JEANINE BOLGER IS PROUD OF THE WORK DONE BY THE KIN CLUB OF VALLEY EAST AND WANT TO TELL THE WORLD

On Monday, February 9, 2009, Jeanine Bolger, a member of the Kin Club of Valley East, appeared in the studio as a special guest on THE LEARNING CLINIC. During the show we also conducted phone interviews with Bob Bolger and Scott Bolger, two very important people in the Kin Club. Jeanine, Bob and Scott helped listeners gain some perspective on the function of the Kin Club of Valley East and we also discussed volunteering in genera.

JOHN ROBERT EXPLAINS THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MUNICIPAL ASSESSMENT AND HOW TO APPEAL YOUR ASSESSMENT

On Monday, March 2, 2009, John Robert, the former Mayor of Valley East, appeared as a special guest on THE LEARNING CLINIC. John provided listeners with information about the municipal assessment process and gave tips on how to appeal your assessment. John was a member of the Provincial Assessment Review Board for several years after retiring from politics and has had a wealth of experience in this area.

Marwa Demassi is a part-time student in the Liberal Arts program at Laurentian University. She plans on applying for Teachers' College once she completes her degree. She is also vice president of the Laurentian University Association of Mature and Part Time Students. Marwa will be the special co-host of The Learning Clinic during evenings when we only have a single guest or on shows when no guests are scheduled.

She is a remarkable young lady who comes from Owen Sound and lives in Sudbury year-round. Marwa is also a member of the Registry of Tutors with the Greater Sudbury Learning Clinic.

On Monday, July 20, 2009, Amanda Kohls, on the right, and her good friend, Danielle Beaulieu, appeared as special guests on The Learning Clinic. Amanda and Danielle spoke at length about their feelings regarding drinking and driving. They also shared some insightful information about their own career aspirations and some of the issues they have faced in school and in life in general. 

Amanda Kohls appears to be a typical 19 year old college student. She grew up in Valley East, attending elementary school at Redwood Acres and Pinecrest Public Schools before graduating from Bishop Alexander Carter. Now she is pursuing a career in health care and will be entering the first year of Nursing at Cambrian College in the fall. She is currently working for Shoppers Drug Mart in Hanmer. Amanda organized a special fund-raising barbeque to raise money in honour of three teens,  Steven Philippe 16, Jazmine Houle, 15, and Caitlin Jelley, 15 who were killed by an alleged drunk driver 

Ron Babin, Production Manager of the Valley Community Theatre, and Jean Fowler, a local actress and supporter of the performing arts, are shown reading one of the new 10-minute plays during a recent appearance on CKLU 96.7 FM’s weekly radio show, The Learning Clinic, hosted by Robert Kirwan.

Ron and Jean were promoting the launch of a brand new initiative called Crazy 8 Theatre which was introduced to the Greater Sudbury Area in May. 

Edgar Lajambe, owner of VCCNet.ca Internet Solutions and Valley Computers appeared as a special guest to bring listeners up to date on some of the modern advances that have been made in the world of communication in recent years.

The Drama/Film Club at Pinecrest Public School is back in action. Since September, a group of about 15 students, under the direction of Mr. Scott Zoldy have been working hard writing movie scripts based on the theme of bullying.  The bullying topics covered in the film include cyberbullying, teasing, taunting, rumors, physical aggression and exclusion.  

Mr. Zoldy, shown in the background of the photo, as well as his brother, Allan Zoldy, on the far right, who was the Assistant Director and Master Video Editor, appeared on the weekly radio program, The Learning Clinic, which can be heard every Monday on CKLU 96.7 FM. They were accompanied by three script writers and performers, from the left, Sarah MacDonald, Laura Lafreniere, and Maverick MacDonald. All three are in Grade 8.

KELLY MCGRATH CONDUCTS VALUABLE RESEARCH

On Monday, June 8, 2009, Kelly McGrath, Lead Researcher, Rural Research Project with Meals on Wheels of Sudbury, appeared as a special guest on THE LEARNING CLINIC. Kelly was discussing the purpose of her project which was intended to measure the utilization of informal community support services in the rural areas of Greater Sudbury. 

DORICE DUSTY TALKS ABOUT COMMUNITY LIVING 

Dorice Dusty, who is in charge of public relations and recruiting with Community Living Greater Sudbury, appeared as a special guest of Robert Kirwan's on THE LEARNING CLINIC this summer. Dorice explained the various services provided by the CLGS and talked about some of the careers that are available for young people. Dorice also talked about Reiki and provided some insight into this wonderful alternative treatment to which many people are turning to improve their quality of life.
