SUDBURY PORTION OF WARD 5
DRUMMOND, RIDEAU, VILLAGE CRESCENT, NORTH OF LASALLE

DRUMMOND ST., RIDEAU ST., VILLAGE CRESCENT AREA NORTH OF LASALLE
The people I have spoken with who live in the vicinity of Drummond Street, Rideau Street, and Village Crescent are for the most part satisfied with their part of the city. They do have some concerns that I will try to address on this page.

Gaining control of municipal taxes:
Most of the people in this area own their own homes and are quite concerned about the rising municipal taxes and water rates. They want City Council to examine the entire operation and find ways of minimizing increases without reducing the level of service. Some feel that there should be cuts made to the middle and upper management levels in order to streamline the salaries.

Transparency and Accountability
There was a lot of talk about the need for the next City Council to be more transparent and accountable. They all want to see an ombudsman and an auditor general in place.

Ward Boundary Review:
A number of people expressed a feeling that the time has come for a Ward boundary review. I did not hear much mentioned about changing the way Councillors are elected within their individual Wards, but they did feel that Wards such as Ward 5 should no longer be split up so that they are part of such diverse geographic groupings. They felt that the area to the east of Notre Dame/Regional Road 80 would be best served by being part of the New Sudbury Ward, while the section of Ward 5 to the west of Notre Dame would be best served by being part of the Flour mill area. They felt that the Valley East portion of Ward 5 could include Val Therese while Capreol could be lumped in with Hanmer. They felt that it would be easier for the Ward representative to identify and become part of the Ward if there was more similarity among the residents.

Door-to-door postal delivery service:
While most understand that this is not a responsibility of the municipal government, some have indicated that they would like the City Council to exert some influence to maintain door-to-door mail delivery.

Maley Drive By-Pass:
People in this area have mixed feelings about the Maley Drive By-Pass that is scheduled for construction to the north of this part of the city. Some feel that if the by-pass is completed, new subdivisions will be built with roads connecting to the by-pass and their quiet neighbourhoods will no longer be quiet. They don't mind the by-pass to take traffic off of Lasalle Blvd., but they do not want any more development.

Maintaining Image of Neighbourhood:
There are a number of streets in this neighbourhood that would add to the beauty of the area if they were better maintained during the summer. The residents would like to see the grass being cut and maintained with more care.

Trimming Overhanging Tree Limbs:
Some of the yards contain beautiful, mature trees that are starting to hang over the streets. Residents say that it could be a safety hazard in strong winds and they would like to see the public works department take action to remove the overhanging branches.

St. Vincent De Paul Depot
People were pleased to see the old school on Lavoie Street being put to good use by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They feel that this is an excellent location for such a depot.

Club Amical Doing a Wonderful Job
Most people I met mentioned that they were proud of the work being done through Club Amical. They stated that there was a need for this kind of support and they were glad to see that support was being given to the organization.

Road Repair and Maintenance Improvements Sought
This part of the city is no different from many other parts of city in that there are glaring examples of sections of the streets that are in desparate need of repair. Some sections are so bad that they pose a driving hazard at night. There are some nice streets in the neighbourhood, but where theres is need for repair, it is bad.
