SUDBURY PORTION OF WARD 5
CAMBRIAN HEIGHTS, BRUCE AVENUE, RYAN HEIGHTS

CAMBRIAN HEIGHTS, BRUCE AVENUE & RYAN HEIGHTS AREA
The people I have spoken with who live in the vicinity of Cambrian Heights, Bruce Avenue and Ryan Heights have shared some concerns that are similar to those in other areas. Many of them live in townhouse cooperatives or apartment buildings.

Improved Safety:
Safety is a major concern for residents because of the heavy traffic at certain times of the day when the students traveling to and  from Collage Boreal use their private road to get access to Cambrian Heights Drive. They also want to see more of a police presence in the neighbourhoods, especially at night.

Employment Opportunities
The City of Greater Sudbury must do more to attract new business and create more jobs in the Greater Sudbury Area for the young families who live in this part of the region. Many of the residents are renting townhouses and apartments while they seek out meaningful career opportunities. It is our responsibility as a City Council to attract new industrial development by reducing red tape for business owners.

Day Care Space
We must also create more day care space in the City, especially in this part of Ward 5, since there are many young families living here where both parents are required to work in order to make ends meet.

Public Transit Service
While public transit service in this part of the city is sufficient, many people have stated that if we could make it more affordable for those of limited means, it would be appreciated. The building of bus shelters is also being requested in order to provide protection from inclement weather for people who use the public transit. People are also asking for Sunday to operate on a Saturday schedule since many people shop on both days of the weekend.

Reducing Services to Control Property Tax Increases Is A Real Fear For Renters
I spoke with a lot of residents who rent apartments who are afraid that the push to reduce municipal taxes may impact on the services that they so desparately depend on. For example public transit, recreation, day care facilities, police and fire services, and playgrounds for their children. We must make sure that the people who are most in need of municipal services are not being negatively impacted by our desire to minimize taxes during the next several years. It is too easy to cut expenses by cutting services, but that is just not acceptable.

ASHWOOD CO-OP PARTNERSHIP

This whole area is seriously lacking in terms of playground equipment for the children. The Ashwood Co-op complex has the nicest playground, but it is for the residents of the Co-op. But with all of the empty space that is available, I feel that the City should find a way to partner with the Co-op to build a much larger playground and parkland setting with shaded areas for parents and plenty of space for children to play. This could become the central playground for this part of Ward 5. Something must be done to provide a place for children of this neighbourhood to play and socialize.

The empty field in front of Ashwood Co-op would be an excellent place for a fenced in mini soccer field that could be used by the public.

There is a very large park land setting beside the fenced in playground that would be ideal for creating an expanded playground with a park with paths and sitting areas for the adults. It would be a nice place to walk to durng the day or evening for quality family time.

Private Play Areas Are Not Sufficient

There are a number of private developments in this area. Each has their own private playground. However, as you can see from the photo below, most of them are substandard and do not adequately provide for the needs of the children. The municipality should be stepping in with funding to build proper play structures on this private land in order to make sure the children are not disadvantaged.

This is another small private play area in one of the housing cooperatives.

Cambrian Arena

The road and parking lot at Cambrian Arena is an embarassment. There is no justification for the deterioration that has been allowed to happen over the years.
