Features of the school

Val Caron Public School is located in the community of Valley East in the City of Greater Sudbury . We are a French Immersion school offering JK , SK and Grade 1 to a population of 151 students.

Our students continue their education at Valley View Public School .

We attract French Immersion students from Valley East and Capreol. Students are bused in from as far away as Radar Road to the east, McCrea Heights to the south, Capreol to the north and Blezard Valley to the west.

Val Caron Public School has computers in each classroom, a library, a Special Education program, a reading intervention program, a spacious school yard and a Before and After School program.

We have two JK, three SK and 3 Grade 1 classes as well as a gymnasium.

Currently, we do not have any split grades.

Our activities are geared to our young learners and include the Thanksgiving Feast, the Christmas Carousel, skating, swimming, the Winter Carnival, and the Summer Play Day. Students also enjoy excellent learning experiences on field trips to Science North, the Sudbury Theatre Centre and musical performances. We also have various productions at the school.
The students make connections with the community. Each year, they visit Topper's Pizza, Dollarama and Dairy Queen.
Parents play a very active role at our school as many of them help in our classrooms, with our fundraising activities and on field trips. Our students are socially inclusive. They have raised funds for various charitable organizations, including the Terry
Fox Foundation and the Easter Seals Society.

Every year, teachers accept co-op students from Confederation Secondary School . This year, we have one university student working as a French as a Second Language monitor and we also have a university student that was hired as a Tutor in the Classroom. This tutor works with students one on one to improve reading skills.

Character Education

Building character from a very young age is evidenced by the large, colourful wall display outlining the ten positive characteristics that are being developed in the students.

We have an ongoing character education program that promotes a variety of positive character traits. We are moving into year three of our World Class School Initiative.

This year, we will be helping students to develop character traits through our character education initiative called the Giraffe Heroes / Les héros girafes. Linking character education with active service and citizenship in the community will give students the chance to put their values into action on some real issues they care about. The students will get involved in service projects and learn how values work in the world. They will have the opportunity to learn and practice important life skills
such as teamwork, communication and other social skills, and to experience success in a real world task.

Anti-Bullying Policy

Everyone at Val Caron Public School is committed to making our school a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

We will treat each other with respect, and we will refuse to tolerate bullying in any form at our school. Bullying is unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone intentionally hurts, frightens, threatens or leaves someone out. It is a form of repeated
aggression used from a position of power. It can be physical, verbal or social.

Staff at our school will do the following things to prevent bullying and help children feel safe at school:
Closely supervise students in all areas of the school and school grounds
Watch for signs of bullying and stop it when it happens
Respond quickly and sensitively to bullying reports
Take seriously parents' concerns about bullying
Look into all reported bullying incidents
Provide a safe environment for students who report bullying
Students at our school prevent bullying by:
Treating each other respectfully
Refusing to bully others
Refusing to let others be bullied
Refusing to watch, laugh or join in when someone is being bullied
Trying to include everyone in play, especially those who are often left out
Reporting bullying to an adult

World Class School Initiative
Giraffe Heroes / Les héros girafes

We are moving into year three of our World Class School Initiative. This year, we will be helping students to develop character traits through our character education initiative called the Giraffe Heroes / Les héros girafes.

Linking character education with active service and citizenship in the community will give students the chance to put their values into action on some real issues they care about.

The students will get involved in service projects and learn how values work in the world. They will have the opportunity to learn and practice important life skills such as teamwork, communication and other social skills, and to experience success in a real-world task.

Stage 1: Hear the Story
Students take in the stories of Giraffe Heroes, people who have stuck their necks out for the common good.

Stage 2: Tell the Story
They take what they've learned and look for more heroes, in storybooks, in media, in their communities, and in their families.

Stage 3: Become the Story
Moved by the stories they've absorbed, the kids emulate Giraffe Heroes, choosing a problem they care about and creating their own service project to address that problem. The story of their project then becomes one that can inspire others.

As part of their first service project, the students collected 240 pairs of socks that were donated to the Outreach Program in Sudbury .

Congratulations!

Students had the opportunity to listen to Stan Tall and Bea Tall and learn how Giraffe Heroes are people who have stuck their necks out for the common good.

Each class has a giraffe that is earning his/her spots.

Students are on the lookout for giraffe heroes in their classroom, in their school and in their community.

Each time they discover a Giraffe Hero, they are invited to put a sticker on their classroom giraffe. School examples of giraffe heroes are promoted on the announcements in the morning.

In the month of October, students learned about Terry Fox, a true Canadian Giraffe Hero! As a new service project, students and parents generously donated Halloween decorations and special treats for families living at the Genevra House. Thank you to all for your generous contributions. Mme Powell's students sorted and prepared Halloween bags for 12 different families. Congratulations!

Turkey Feast - October 6, 2006

Thank you to all our parents who contributed to this delicious feast. It was a huge success!

In the month of November, students wrote postcards to Canadian soldiers overseas. A special giraffe hero was proudly highlighted on our Giraffe Heroes bulletin board: Pte Jesse Tait.
We thank our special guests from the Chelmsford Royal Canadian Branch 553 who joined us during our Giraffe Heroes Assembly on November 30th.

Congratulations to Mme Darlene Fogal, our secretary who is our giraffe hero for the month of December. She is constantly sticking her neck out for students and staff. We love you Mme Darlene!

Thank you to all students and parents for their contribution to our mitten tree. We collected over 100 pairs of mittens. Treemendous!! Mittens will be donated and put in Christmas baskets for families in the Valley.

Congratulations to Wanda Seeley and Victoria Masterson who were recognized as our Giraffe Heroes for the month of January. Thanks to their dedication as library volunteers and as our bingo coordinators, our school is enriched.
