Construction Work On Long-Term Care Facility Is Under Way

It all started with a brief sod-turning ceremony on August 17. The shovellers included Louise Portelance, Ward 3 Councillor, Alexander Jarlett, Co-owner, Erna Baniulis, Co-owner, and Ron Dupuis, Ward 3 Councillor. As you can imagine, those small gold shovels have been replaced by much larger machines as construction of the 128-bed long-term care facility which will be located at the northeast corner of Main and Frappier in Val Caron is well under way. The project is expected to generate over 100 new jobs in the community and should be ready for occupancy in the Fall of 2002. Residents of Valley East who drive by the site will notice a big difference in the landscape every day.

Business Development And Economic Growth Continue To Be Top Priorities In Valley East

For as long as we can remember, local leaders have been doing everything possible to stimulate economic growth and development in Valley East and Capreol. If we are going to continue to grow as a community and provide opportunity for our youth to find meaningful careers in this area, we must put our money to work closer to home to develop these opportunities. They won’t just appear out of nowhere.

This year, the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, which has long been recognized as the voice of business in the Sudbury region, held one of its monthly After Business Session in the community of Valley East. The event, which provides an opportunity for businesses to display their goods and services in a mini-trade show atmosphere while allowing visitors to network, was held at the Clearview Golf Club in Val Caron. Evelyn Hoffman, Clubhouse Manager of Clearview, is shown in the photo greeting visitors and explaining what the facility has to offer. Owner, Claudia Gobeil also addressed the crowd to welcome them and outline the different facets of the golf club and restaurant complex. Close to 100 people took part in the event, with some taking advantage of the chance to play a round of golf prior to the session.

The fact that this popular monthly business event was held in Valley East for the first time ever, holds special significance due to the fact that the merchants of Valley East may have felt some loss of community identity with the amalgamation into the City of Greater Sudbury. The turn-out at the After Business Session showed that Valley East is still a viable commercial centre in the region. Moreover, the Chamber of Commerce was also signalling to the rest of the region that Valley East is a significant player in the economic development of the City of Greater Sudbury.

As we move into the busy Christmas season, the retail business in the community depends on the solid support of residents. Valley East is still one of the fastest growing areas in the City of Greater Sudbury and yet we are in dire need of economic stimulation. The community must work together in order to continue to provide the enhanced quality of life to which we have become accustomed. Small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of any community. They are the ones who provide sponsorship for our sports teams. They are the ones who donate to the penny tables at special fund-raising events. They are the ones who provide jobs for our residents. We must all remember these things as we move on into the 21st Century . The Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce has recognized the significance of Valley East. It is now time for the rest of us to follow suit.

On behalf of all of the businesses in the communities of Valley East and Capreol, we urge residents to take the time to at least visit the local stores and find out what they have to offer. We feel you will be pleasantly surprised at the selection, quality and personal service that awaits you at these local establishments. By giving consideration to the goods and services offered by community businesses, you will be helping stimulate a sagging economy and doing your part to ensure a strong and viable future for our children.
