The
King Sportswear Adult Mixed Soccer club is shown moments after winning
their division at the 6th Annual Moncion’s Invitational
Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Valley East Soccer Club. They had
just edged out the other team in their division, Moncion’s, in an
exciting shoot-out. Team members include, back row, from the left: Yvon
Boudreau, Serge Daoust, Mike Thomas, Angela Thomas, Daniel Mathieu,
Andre Bertrand, and Daryl Kretzschmar. The front row includes: Laurie
Hoag, Mike Daoust, Denis Leduc, Anne Ross, Sylvia Kretzschmar and
Melissa Cameron. Robin Auger is standing in the middle no-man’s land
behind Laurie Hoag. Missing from the picture are team members Alyson
Fleming, Marcel Gravelle and Carly Buckner.
During
the tournament, the teams evenly split their games with a win a loss and
tie each. In addition, they also scored the same number of goals so a
shoot-out was necessary to determine the title.
“These
teams are always close, even during the league plan,” commented Carole
Blanchette, who has been President of the Association for the past four
years. “They play every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. and each game ends
up tied or one goal apart. It is really nice to see.”
From
talking to the players, it seems as if Adult Soccer may actually take
off in this area.
“There
are so many soccer families in the Valley now,” commented Mike Mallet,
co-ordinator of the tournament and a long-time Board member. “Some of
the adults indicated that they would like to play, so we tried it last
year and this year with success. A lot of the older kids are looking
forward to continuing in the sport once they graduate from the 17 and
under division. Because of this, we see adult soccer becoming even more
popular in the future.”
Members
of the other adult team, Moncion’s Your Independent Grocers, include:
Mike Arkilander, Denis Lefebvre, Shawn Bellemore, Connie Boyd, Laurie
Carbone, Corey Daalmeyer, Marcel Dubois, Noel Mejia, Gerry Paquette,
Michel Paradis, Kim Radanovich, Tony Rossini, Ivon Trottier, Curtis
Shiewck, Jason Angus, Cindy Angus and Christine Kraus.
Spectators
are welcome to come out and watch the adults play every Wednesday at the
Howard Johston Recreation Centre on Elmview Drive. Game time is 9 p.m.
