Summer Reading Program Offered During the Summer by Public Libraries

The Greater City of Sudbury has organised a Summer Reading Program with the goal to encourage children to read.  Children can register at their local branch.  Registration is free.  When a child registers, he receives a bookmark.  Upon every visit at the library, the child can present his bookmark to the librarian and he will receive a sticker(One sticker per visit, NOT one sticker per book).  After everytime that he collects 5 stickers, he can choose a prize from the treasure chest.  Also, when he registers he will fill out a ballot to be eligible for the grand prize and second prize.  The grand prize is a bike and the second is a scooter.  The draw for the prizes will take place at the Wizard Homecoming Celebration at Science North, August 24.  Everyone registered is welcome to attend the party, free of charge. The theme reading club is "Books Are Magic".  Keeping with this theme, throughout the summer there will be activities at all the libraries.  The activities are geared for children ages 5 to 12, but younger ones may attend if a parents stays with them.  There are no registrations for these activities, and they are free.  The children just need to show up.  If they can't make it at the times for their local libraries, they are welcome to attend the activities of any other library throughout the Greater City of Sudbury.  The first week, the activity is to make wizard costumes.  The second week, a magician will be appearing at seven of the 12 libraries.  He will be at The Valley East Library as well as the Capreol Library.  The third week, Science North will making a presentation on potions at some of the libraries, including the Valley and Capreol.  The fourth week, Science North will be returning to present a flight workshop to the same libraries.  The fifth week is "crack the code".  The sixth week is a really special week.  Muskoka Wildlife Center will be bringing some animals to the Valley East Branch and the Main Branch.  The other branches will be making animal masks.  For anyone interested in attending the activities, calendars with all the times and days are available at all the libraries.  The are some activities that have both a french and english program at some of the branches(including the Valley branch).  The guest speaker presentations will be bilingual. There are prizes to be one at each branch every week for those children who attend the activities. Also during the Homecoming Party at Science North, there will be a Harry Potter look-a-like contest, and a magical beast contest.  Anyone interested in the contest can get more information at the libraries. People can log on to the library home page for the times and days for the activities at www.sudbury.library.on.ca
