SUDBURY PORTION OF WARD 5
KENT COURT, MITCHELL STREET, CRESCENT PARK

KENT COURT & MITCHELL STREET APARTMENT COMPLEXES
The people in the area of the Kent Court and Mitchell Street apartment complexes have expressed a desire for improvements in a number of different areas. These concerns were expressed by residents of the apartment complexes as well as individual home owners and people renting homes in this part of the city.

Improved Safety:
There are a large number of children living in the area as well as some students who attend post-secondary school.
While this has been a relatively safe area of the city, they residents still ask for more police presence, especially in the evening when many of the residents are walking back to the apartment from the bus stop on Lasalle Blvd.

Employment Opportunities
The City of Greater Sudbury must do more to attract new business and create more jobs in the Greater Sudbury Area for the young families and the students who live in this part of the region. Many of the residents are renting apartments while they seek out meaningful career opportunities. It is our responsibility as a City Council to attract new industrial development by reducing red tape for business owners. The Valley East Industrial Park is less than 15 minutes away for residents in this part of the City, so I will be doing what I can to encourage businesses to set up in that part of the city in order to create job opportunities for the people living in the Sudbury portion of Ward 5.

Day Care Space
We must also create more day care space in the City, especially in this part of Ward 5, since there are many young families living here where both parents are required to work in order to make ends meet. We also have a lot of single parent families, so day care is critical.

Public Transit Service
While public transit service in this part of the city is sufficient, many people have stated that if we could make it more affordable for those of limited means, it would be appreciated. The building of bus shelters is also being requested in order to provide protection from inclement weather for people who use the public transit. People are also asking for Sunday to operate on a Saturday schedule since many people shop on both days of the weekend.

Reducing Services to Control Property Tax Increases Is A Real Fear For Renters
I spoke with a lot of residents who rent apartments who are afraid that the push to reduce municipal taxes may impact on the services that they so desparately depend on. For example public transit, recreation, day care facilities, police and fire services, and playgrounds for their children. We must make sure that the people who are most in need of municipal services are not being negatively impacted by our desire to minimize taxes during the next several years. It is too easy to cut expenses by cutting services, but that is just not acceptable.

Lack of Playground Equipment Is a Major Concern

I am extremely disturbed to find out that there is not a single play area for children living in this part of the City. There was a small play area in the middle of the Kent Court Apartment complexes, but it has now been taken down.

I have looked over the area and there are some places where the city should be setting up a municipal park with state of the art playground equipment for use by the children in this part of the city.

It would be appropriate for the City to work cooperatively with the owners of the Kent Court apartments to share in the cost of establishing a large and attractive park setting in between the complexes. This would then provide residents of the apartment complex as well as other residents nearby to enjoy their leisure time and give the children a place to play.

Walking Path Should Be Created

There is a little path that goes from the parking lot behind Kent Court apartments to Mitchell Street. I think this would be a good walking path for the municipality to fix up and maintain. It gives people ready access to the street and the bush area north of the neighbourhood for hiking and blueberry picking. It would help enhance the area and make it safer for people to walk up the steep bank to get back to the parking lot.

Joseph MacDonald Memorial Park

The Joe MacDonald Memorial Park is one of the most attractive places for residents to sit and relax in this part of the City, but it is not all that quiet since it is right beside Lasalle Blvd with all of the heavy traffic. Some have indicated that it would have been nice to set up a full park just accross Loraine Street. That is the site that many people feel would be an ideal location for a playground with full equipment, plus a shadded sitting area where young families can gather for a picnic. Either the Joe MacDonald park could be moved to the new park area or a dog park could set up along the play area.

The whole park could be fenced in for safety and would provide a beautiful park for this entire area of the City. The land should be purchased for this purpose and the city should take full responsibility.

O'Grady Street Bus Shelter

Many of the people living in the Apartment complexes rely on public transit to get around the City and use O'Grady Street to gain access to Lasalle Blvd. Students also use this route to attend the secondary and post-secondary school in the area.

Some people have asked for a bus shelter to be built at the end of O'Grady Street so that they can get out of the rain and snow while waiting for their bus to come along.

Others say that they would like to see the police coming around the area more often just to ensure that this route is safe for walkers who have to use the street at night to return home from work or school.

Paved paths would also make it easier to walk during the winter months.

Gordon Avenue Bus Shelter

Gordon Avenue is a popular bus stop for residents of Gordon Avenue and Crescent Park Road. It has been stated that a bus shelter would be appropriate and could be set up right at the end of the turn-around for use during inclement weather.

A lot of people use public transit from this area since it is so close to one of the major intersections in the City of Greater Sudbury.
